Away from the northern circuit, southern Ethiopia offers a completely different journey: the great rift lakes, flamingo-filled waters, and the vast Afro-alpine moorlands of Bale.
This six-day route links Arba Minch and the twin lakes Abaya and Chamo, with their crocodile-studded shores and forested hills, before crossing to Bale for a taste of its highland wilderness.
It's an excellent, easy-going-to-energetic mix for travellers who've 'done the north' or who simply love Africa's open landscapes.
Route difficulty

Drive south beside the rift valley lakes and the Chencha highlands, arriving in Arba Minch in the afternoon.
A morning boat safari for crocodiles and hippos, then a walk through the 'forty springs' of Nech Sar and its forested escarpment.
Drive up to the Gamo town of Chencha for sweeping viewpoints and village life, returning to the lakes for the night.
A long scenic transfer east to the edge of the Bale Mountains, settling in at Dinsho with an introductory forest walk.
Drive and short-walk the Sanetti Plateau, Africa's largest Afro-alpine moorland, with time for wolf and lobelia spotting.
Transfer back to Addis Ababa with a lunch stop in the highland town of Asella, where the tour ends.
