At 4,543 metres, Ras Dashen is the highest point in Ethiopia and the fourth-highest in Africa. This seven-day trek approaches it via the great northern escarpment, camping under vast skies and crossing dramatic high passes.
The route links the classic western sections of the park with the eastern massif, offering some of the wildest, emptiest walking in Ethiopia before the final rewarding summit push.
This is a genuine mountaineering undertaking — a high level of fitness, prior high-altitude walking, and comfort with long exposed days are essential.

Park formalities in Debark, then drive into the western park for an acclimatisation walk to the Sankaber meadow and first escarpment views.
Traverse along the escarpment lip past Jinbar waterfalls, then climb through heather moorland toward Gich to acclimatise for the high camp.
Sunrise at Imet Gogo, then a long exposed traverse past vast gelada herds to Chennek, gaining altitude steadily.
Descend into the wild Ambiko river valley, the gateway to the eastern massif, and camp in the high meadows beneath the peak.
Start before dawn for the long climb toward the summit. Stand on the roof of Ethiopia, then descend back to the Ambiko camp.
A long, rewarding traverse back over the passes to the Chennek campsite for the final night on the trail.
Descend through the eastern valleys to the trailhead and transfer to Debark or Gondar, where the trek ends.
