Barely featured on most itineraries, Harar is one of Africa's most enchanting ancient cities: a maze of 368 alleys inside a surviving 16th-century wall.
This four-day trip couples the city with the surrounding eastern landscapes, from the walled Jugol old town to the forests and views of the escarpment.
The highlight for many is the twilight hyena feeding — an intimate, extraordinary local tradition conducted by the famed 'hyena men'.

Fly or drive east to Dire Dawa, then transfer to Harar for a first exploration of the old town.
A full day walking the Jugol with a local guide — mosques, markets, Rimbaud's house and craft alleys — capped by the hyena feeding at dusk.
Morning markets, a visit to the surrounding hills and villages, and free time for coffee and shopping.
Transfer back toward Dire Dawa and fly or take the train to Addis Ababa, where the tour ends.
