Travelling the Simien Mountains with children sounds ambitious — then you watch a thousand gelada baboons graze a meadow and discover the kids forgot to complain. The highlands are, in fact, a brilliant family destination when the pace and camps are chosen right.
Choose the gentler profile
The full escarpment traverse is a grown-ups' expedition. Families do better with lodge-based days: short walks out and back rather than multi-night camping, cable heights over rocky scrambles, and a warm room with a real mattress every night. The wildlife day-walks need no overnight sacrifice at all.
The wildlife show is the star
Gelada baboons are the great equaliser — their troops, grunts and 'bleeding-heart' chests hold kids' attention for hours without a word of explanation. Lammergeier vultures quartering the cliffs at eye level run a close second, and the shepherd children along the trails are often the best guides of the day.
Altitude with juniors
Most family-friendly routes stay between 3,000 and 3,600 metres — high enough to feel the mountains, low enough to keep young heads comfortable. Keep water bottles topped up, go slowly on any climb, and let the lodge be the recovery room. A three-day family programme that mixes one short trek with rest days is exactly the shape our family tour takes.
