The Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire: A Tanzania Safari Primer

Tanzania is East Africa's heavyweight safari destination, and the way to see it well — especially on a limited window from an Ethiopia itinerary — is its classic three-park circuit: Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. Five days is workable; the structure is everything.

Tarangire National Park is the underrated starter: during the dry season its river draws one of Africa's largest elephant populations, under towering baobabs. It delivers big sightings on day one with far less crowd pressure than the headline parks — the perfect confidence-building opener.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed volcano holding a sealed 260-square-kilometre bowl of savanna and soda lake — a resident, concentrated cast of the Big Five. A day here compresses the classic African safari into a single descent and return. Morning light on the crater floor is reliably stunning.

The Serengeti's southern shortgrass plains are where the Migration drops its calves each February; the northern woodlands, in June–October, are where the herds mass for the Mara River crossings. Either way, a full day crossing the plains with a game-drive car is safari distilled. You may see the herds invade the horizon, or the resident lions holding court. Both count.
