Mountain gorillas survive today in two small regions: the Virunga Volcanoes that straddle Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC, and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in southwest Uganda. Daily permits are strictly limited, book months ahead, and are the single biggest line in the budget — and the single most worthwhile one. Expect a morning in the forest: rangers track the family by foot, sometimes along streams and over valley slopes. Treks range from gentle hour-long walks with a family near the road to full-morning scrambles when the gorillas move. When the guides halt and the scouts hand back to silence, you sit low, keep a 7-metre distance, never direct eye contact at a silverback, and simply watch. The hour evaporates.
